Currently known in the world for the splendid mosaics, Ravenna acquired remarkable prestige when it became capital of the west Roman Empire.
Heritage of that glorious period is the large artistic patrimony: the San Vitale church, the Sant' Apollinare in Classe and Sant' Apollinare Nuovo basilicas and the Galla Placidia mausoleum.
